Rooibos tea popular

Why is Rooibos tea so popular?

Since time immemorial the Khoisan tribes in the Cederberg region of South Africa prized the leaves from the Aspalathus Linearis plant for its medicinal properties and naturally sweet taste. Few others, however, were even aware of it.

All this changed in 1968 when Annique Theron, a South African mother, published a book on Rooibos tea's amazing health benefits. This triggered a huge number of research studies which discovered more about the plant’s remarkable properties and helped to create a steady surge in demand. By 2018 global sales had increased to 14,000 tons. That’s equivalent to just over six billion cups of tea, about one cuppa for every human being on earth! We’re pretty sure this is just the beginning – Rooibos has so much going for it that we think all those people will eventually be enjoying a few cuppas every single day!

It Tastes Great

Rooibos has a uniquely bold and sweet nutty flavor that’s immensely refreshing. There’s no bitter aftertaste, so you really don’t need to add sugar. Kids love it and you can serve it iced as a great alternative to sugar-loaded sodas. You can drink it with milk, or without.

As well as drinking it hot or cold it goes well with a wide variety of other spicy or sweet ingredients including honey, chocolate, oranges, lemons, apricots, pineapples, and coconuts. You can serve it in smoothies, mocktails, cocktails, and lots of different dishes from succulent roasts to delicious desserts.

Health Benefits in Abundance

Rooibos is rich in antioxidants that can help prevent cell damage caused by excess free radicals in your system. Research suggests that drinking Rooibos could aid in preventing the onset and progression of health issues such as cancer and heart disease. Studies also show it can help promote cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. There’s further evidence it can help you stop developing type 2 diabetes and it also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

So Good for Your Skin

Because it calms inflammation, Rooibos is excellent for soothing your skin and helps with eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and acne. Also, the antioxidants found in Rooibos can help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. There’s even evidence that Rooibos has anti-aging properties and can possibly help to keep skin smooth, supple, and wrinkle-free as we grow older.

Helps to Keep You Calm

Rooibos is caffeine-free and this means, unlike a lot of other teas, coffee, and soft drinks, it won’t get you buzzed up. But that’s not all. It contains polyphenols that inhibit the production of the stress hormone cortisol and therefore helps to keep anxiety at bay. So, when we say that drinking Rooibos Rocks creates moments of calm in a world of crazy we’re not kidding – it’s based on serious biochemical research.
